MPP Jessica Bell Small Business Round Table
Tomorrow there will be a Small Business RoundTable, with guests MPP Catherine Fife, Official Opposition Critic for Economic Growth and Job Creation and John Kiru, Executive Director of TABIA (Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas).
We will be discussing the impact of the pandemic on local business, the governments’ response, and the ONDP’s Save Main Street plan.
We are losing our “Main Streets” which threatens our economy, our jobs, and the vibrancy of our neighbourhoods. That’s why the ONDP is calling for:
- A ban on all evictions, lockouts or eviction threats by commercial landlords until the pandemic ends
- A utility payment freeze for small and medium-sized businesses
- A stand-alone emergency 75 per cent commercial rent subsidy, up to $10,000 per month
- A fund for businesses that face historic barriers
The virtual gathering will be held on Thursday October 22nd
If you would like to join in the conversation please register here.
If you have questions in advance of the Round Table, please submit them by email to jbell-co@ndp.on.ca.

- a 75 per cent commercial rent subsidy,
- sick days for all,
- a fund to help businesses with safe-reopening costs or remote-work set-up costs,
- more non-profit and public child care spaces for working parents,
- and end to insurance gouging and insurance denials.

KENSINGTON MARKET REDEVELOPMENT DETAILS
The current proposal is for a 5-storey, student-focused residential rental building with 77 units and ground-floor retail space. The building provides a 3-storey base that complements the 2-3 storey buildings on St. Andrew Street and Kensington Avenue, and steps back from the base on the 4th and 5th floors. The building will feature a mix of unit sizes, with approximately 80% studios and 1-bedroom units and 20% 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom units to accommodate a variety of residents, including students and families. The design respects Kensington’s unique mixed-use character and incorporates enhancements to the public realm to contribute to the active streetscape that distinguishes this neighborhood.

KENSINGTON KREATORS supports the market’s creative community (artists, designers, performers, not-for profits etc) with an the opportunity to test one out of three themed based reactivation ideas made for the Market, by the Market through the City’s Innovation Grant.
Kensington Market has a very robust community of passionate, vocal stakeholders – all whom deeply love and care for their neighbourhood. This approach is unique in that it enables more voices from the community, who may not otherwise have one, to share their vision on rebuilding their Market post COVID-19. This allows the BIA to work collectively with more members, rather than assuming what type of projects are best for our community.
