The KMBIA is happy to announce one of its upcoming projects for 2021 in collaboration with the City of Toronto’s ArtworxTO Grant and local non-profit community arts organization, Red Pepper Spectacle Arts.
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Together we will facilitate and collaborate on an Indigenous-led, Youth engaged mosaic design with the community, to be installed upon the existing concrete boundaries of Bellevue Square Park. The historic Bellevue Square Park, in the heart of Kensington Market is the center of our community gatherings. It provides an accessible, public space for residents, businesses and visitors to intersect and
co-mingle.
As Kensington is a nationally recognized historical site, this neighbourhood’s ability to allow cultures from allover the world to happily c o-exist in a small geographical area, highlights the importance of this neigbourhood’s past, present and future. However the Market, has yet to engage in a formal acknowledgment of indigenous history and culture. Our commitment to participate in the honoring and commemorating the Indigenous presence and heritage is a primary objective.
Celebrating Toronto’s Art and Community
ArtworxTO: Toronto’s Year of Public Art 2021 will kick-off the City’s new 10-Year of Public Art Strategy , signalling Toronto’s renewed commitment to public art. The program will celebrate Toronto’s incredible collection of public art and the artists behind it, while creating more opportunities for the public to connect and engage with the work. Toronto’s commitment to this exciting new program underscores a dedication to the arts sector as an essential component of a vibrant city.
ArtworxTO will provide new opportunities for both Toronto and international artists to play a leading role in the development of public art projects within the city. The program will work closely with artists and Toronto’s key arts institutions to deliver major public art projects and commissions for 2021.
To celebrate the imperative roles the Business Improvement Areas play in the realm of public art, ArtworxTO has created a specific funding stream with a maximum budget of $200,000 for all BIAs across Toronto.
